2017 Mitsubishi Mirage vs Previous Models

The Mirage has always been a budget-friendly hatchback filled with style, and the 2017 model year includes numerous updates after skipping the 2016 model year. Put the 2015 and 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage next to each other, and you will notice that the 2017 model has a new grille, hood, bumpers, rear spoiler, wheels, and lighting. Once you sit inside the cabin of the 2017 Mirage, you can take advantage of the new controls, fabrics, and instruments. There are also more options than were previously available, including the Rockford Fosgate audio system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also new options for this model year and mark the first time they have been available on a Mitsubishi, something which will probably quickly change.

Under the hood, you have the same 1.2-liter inline-3 engine overall, but it has a new camshaft. This change increases output to 78 horsepower along with a torque of 74 pound-feet. These figures may seem small, but they represent an increase of 4 horsepower. Although you aren't likely to see them, the front brake discs and the rear drums have also gotten larger. The suspension has even been retuned.

Get to Know the Mitsubishi Mirage History

The Mitsubishi Mirage goes back several generations, first launching in 1978 under the name Colt and distributed by Dodge, although made by Mitsubishi. The first generation included a uniquely mounted transmission that was under the engine and complementing an underdrive gearbox to avoid icing within the carburetor, which was a risk due to the model's unique shape. This gearbox could transfer power in high or low modes, meaning that the earlier trims had two levers, making the 4-speed act like an 8-speed. The second generation in 1983 switched to a 5-door design and added a new grille insert plus flush-mounted headlamps. It was also divided into three trims, including a 3-door, 5-door, and 4-door sedan. All markets got new 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter engines while some also got 1.6-liter, 1.8-liter, and diesel powertrains.

The third generation began in 1987 with the Mirage getting a more rounded exterior and improved visibility via the nearly vertical rear window. The hatchback increased to 92 horsepower while the sedan got up to 123 horses. The 1991 Mirage marked the fourth generation, adding optional AWD and increasing the engine options. Between 2004 and 2012, the Mirage wasn't produced, being replaced by the Colt. It made its return in 2012, emphasizing budget-friendliness and efficiency and giving us a model very close to the current one.
